I do not rely on mass media to tell me what I should consider trendy.
And, I do not consider "urban culture" to be the defining culture in our society. I doubt that murses will ever catch on in the small town I live in, in a borderline rural area.
I also have to wonder whether the Today Show receives revenue from promoting products like this.
The media can create the trend that it pretends it is merely reporting on. I will not be so easily manipulated.
