My husband was twice (each time for a period of six months) been stationed abroad and although I did not rejoiced I accepted it had to be that way. I missed him of course and sometimes I worried for him but knowing that he would come back I had no problems with continue everyday life very much as normal.
If you and your gf have a good relationship, truly love each other and trust each other you know that she will come back to you and you both will benefit from what she has learned and experienced.
If your relationship is not really good and you do not love each other as much as you should then your gf going away is a chance to find out that you are not meant to be together.
Young people tend to think that it is the end of the world if he beloved for a short time is out of sight but when you have been together for a while and the love has been replenished with trust and a sense of deep cohesion then you will find it much easier and also beneficial to allow each other the necessary freedom.
