40k is a huge sum !
That would get you just about anything in terms of a very decent used car !
I suppose high end BMW or Jaguar if style and comfort are your thing !
But for that kind of money you could also look at what I suppose we'd call vintage stuff too !
Something unique and distinctive from the past ?
Something like (if you could find one of course !) A Jensen Healy ? Or an E-Type Jaguar ? A half-decent Porsche ?

@Picklebobble: Early 70's too. I admit, I would love a car styled in the past with today's tech and comfort. Top Gear showed us the updated Interceptor which would be fun.
