On Expertise

When you’re an expert in something, your whole life becomes watching people who are qualified to say nothing about anything say everything about your thing and get treated like they’re the next big thing. Doubly so if they’re a white dude and you’re not.

@canusernamebemyusername I mean, I get paid to be an expert in a subject area, but when That One Guy on the client’s Board thinks otherwise and starts spinning Folksy Yarns deriding the entire profession you work for and the other people charged with governance lap it up, yeah, it gets frustrating.

@TiffAching Not knowing what you do (and not asking) I understand that moment when a client has that one person who thinks they know more than you. I always remember one thing as I gently shut them down. They are stroking the check.

I do not know about you but they always seem to sit at the furthest point away from you in the room so when they try to be the smartest person in the room they also the defacto "front of the room" at that moment.
