Unless you are growing a garden, hunting and fishing, the minimum cost of feeding someone in the US is between $25 and $30 a week. i.e. $3 to $4 per day. Yes, you can do it cheaper with a sack of beans and a sack of rice, or cheap junk food, but that's not healthy.

You can also do the heroics mentioned above, but you still need to eat while watching the garden to grow.

Food stamps (SNAP) are there to help you bridge the gap until you get back in the swing of things.

Oh, and don't forget, the "S" in SNAP stands for supplemental, meaning that they don't always pay for everything.
