It's a misconception. Men fall in love with girls who are beautiful and hot. It's very simple, no need to over-think or look for any deep psychological insight. Any statement to the contrary is just an attempt to intellectualize or rationalize what is a simple physical/biological attraction.

I believe "playing hard to get" is a thing of the distant past - 1950's or older. It harks to a time of double standards when a woman could not say "yes" without being automatically disrespected for being a slut. To prove her value as a female, she was obliged to say no even if she liked the man and wanted to get to know him.
Nowadays, women are expected to say what they mean. No always means no and has legal force.
Naturally it is disappointing if the person one desires doesn't feel the same way.
But a man is responsible for his own ego. j

He could, however, reflect on whether he went about it in the wrong way. Most women prefer relationship and genuine connection.
Whatever he wants, he needs to be honest about it, and willing to fully and immediately accept a no.
