To be dominant and to dominate are two different things. You can be a dominant person by asserting yourself, as mentioned before, without coming off as a jerk. Dominating others, on the other hand isn't usually taken well unless it's expected of you beforehand.

As for if I've ever tried to dominate someone before? Only when it was something they and I discussed, setting up every thing beforehand and then we'd tried it. Of course, this was a more private setting and was agreed upon mutually.
