@HeteroDox I was just curious if OP had a specific job in mind. It's an athlete's job to score so why cheer over it? It's a server's job to bring you food but you still say thank you.

Some jobs don't require immediate gratitude, but most of the do. This is my belief at least. Speaking from personal and observational experience, hearing even just one customer/guest/client saying thank you or showing any appreciation can be a great help to one's mental health.

@RedwoodBarman I tend to agree... teh once thankless jobs are now esential thanks to covid so that little extra can go a long way
