I don't find it hard to trust people but this is primarily because I am not leaning on people to the extent that I collapse if they prove unreliable. People are complementary to my life, they are not the crux of my life.

I think that is the problem that many people have when it comes to trusting. They are putting far too much weight on one person and have far little left over without that person. Whilst I understand that relationships and love will require that you become emotionally dependent to some degree, there should be enough of you left over to survive if all should not go well. When you enter a relationship with nothing, no confidence, no happiness, then you are entirely dependent upon it and you crash and burn when it's gone. That kind of scenario is what makes people so wary of trusting.
