It would be more accurate to call it a nation of invaders.
So if these migrants are "invading" then is that not the American spirit in its purest form?

@Eternity No, that would not be more accurate. Though there have been campaigns to settle the land and rid it of "savages," by and large immigration has been about the spirit of adventure and the push for better and more plentiful opportunities. The Asians, Italians and Irish hardly cam over and conquered anything by invasion. Likewise Jews or Russians of any other culture. We have dark chapters in our history, but being a country occupied over the centuries by the winning invaders isn't one of them.

@Graylight I dunno about spirit of adventure, on the case of the Irish it was due to genocide/starvation. There wasn't much choice.

@basilfawlty89 Two differing reasons. Both legitimate.

@Graylight true, but in the case of the early WASP immigrants, they were invaders who killed Native Americans and stole land.

@basilfawlty89 Yes, and I make an allowance for that. And it really wasn't WASPS. It started much, much earlier with Spanish explorers and missionaries.
But genocide by WASP as we know it didn't really take hold until the Western expansion into inhabited territories. Up until then, it was attempts as compromises and individual skirmishes. For the most part.

@Graylight well definitely, the Spanish aren't blameless and did horrible things to our people, Mexicans remember.
