So is the sun going to quit its fusion or is the earth going to stop spinning on its axis?

the way I understand it is that we will experience what happens in Alaska, where they have long bouts of darkness...

OK but in the far north and south the sun simply remains below the curvature of the earth and a few months later the sun remains above the curvature of the earth giving 24 hour days of sunshine.
