Some are very good people, and go into law enforcement for the noblest of reasons. My brother's a patrolman and I remember when he joined the force. He's a kind man, with a strong sense of right and wrong, always been a "straight arrow". But they literally see humanity at its very worst, and even the best become cynical to some extent. So it's even worse when people join who already have prejudices, or need to overpower others, because they take that with them on the job.

And what we're hearing about lately isn't new; police have been killing civilians, often in black and Latino neighborhoods, since the very beginning, but only recently have there been videocameras and cellphone cameras to provide irrefutable proof. One of the reasons for the Rodney King riots in 1992 wasn't only because of the original beating, that kind of thing had gone on all the time. But for the first time people on the outside could see for themselves, and the Simi Valley jury still acquitted the police officers, which told the community, "Yes, we have now seen that this is happening. We don't care."

@Bijouxbroussard That is the worst part of our justice system. A Judge or Jury can legitimize the worst of our culture.
