A few good teachers that I had in grade school, my friends, and my boyfriend. I also had to learn a lot through trial and error, and I had some setbacks when I trusted the wrong people. I've had to realize that not everyone has my best interests at heart, including some of the people I'm supposed to trust most. And even some people who do want what's best for me don't necessarily know what's right for me. I've had to learn to trust my own gut feelings, and be true to myself. And I had to take a look at my mental list of people whose good opinion matters to me - everyone has one - and make sure that I'm on that list. I'm still working on this stuff, and I have a long way to go, but that has helped.

Mostly listening, observation, and a lot of trial and error. I have had many influences and some help along the way, but I mostly have made it on personal faith and self-reliance. You see, I was mostly an outcast and a loner for the biggest part of my life. I will add that I was faced with a choice early on: I could just give up and become angry, cold-hearted, and go down a path of self destruction... or I could "educate" myself and do the best I could, make the most of myself possible, and be the best "me" I could be. I chose the second route and now I have a life that though it may not be much in most people's eyes, it is one I am very proud of and happy with and I have people in it that do care about me and are always there for me. It wasn't easy and it was a long time in coming but well worth the effort and wait...it is a journey and I am continuing to learn and grow, and the best part is I no longer am feeling as if I am doing it alone.🤠

@indyjoe that's usually an uphill climb. I've been there
indyjoe · 56-60, M
@Notanymore Indeed, and not an easy climb either….lots of heartaches, disappointments, setback, failures, and frustrations. I just commented further on my response. It's nice to know that there are folks who know exactly what I'm talking about.

Once I found my adoptive parents ( well started “ stealing” food they actually left for me to find ) it seems people went out of their way to help me . In college and professional school , after my parents passed , after I was married ... extremely kind and wonderful People helped guide me along the path . Now that I have “ made it” , things have come full circle and it is I that goes out of my way to help others if I can . 😉

Most of my life, I was a loner. Only thru my hard-headedness, cockiness, refusing to be beat down, and hard work... I made it this far.

But for the past 5 years, my husband has helped, encouraged me more than "anyone" in my life.
