Why are people always so desperate for someone to tell them what to do?

For a dozen reasons. Or a hundred.

Chief among them is mental laziness. It's so much easier to 'get with the program' than to make a plan yourself. Then there's responsibility. How can anyone hold me to blame if I was just one of a herd? I was just following the herd. (The 'just keeping up with traffic' speeding defense.) Safety. I don't want to be the lead sled dog. The lead is the first one to run into trouble.

And, to some extent, biology. Humans are 'social organisms.' So are wolves and hyenas and lions. One lone animal is far less likely to survive against an organized unit.
