Why are there no like third notes or fifth notes? Why are they always like half, quarter and eight and sixteenth?

@XenonRush Cause...maths? You start from the whole (longest duration) and then divide. So you have half of it and then divide again etc.

Is it not possible to take a whole and “split” it into thirds? You can take a whole and split it into thirds, can you not?Think of a pizza, you can cut it into thirds, right? Why not the same with the duration of a whole note? Just split the time of it into 3 equal 1/3 parts? Why would it not work?

@XenonRush A whole note equals four beats. How will you get [b]equal[/b] thirds that will still make sense? Cause that's the whole point. Besides there are ways to extend a note's or a whole phrase's duration.

@XenonRush It really has to do with the beats. Think of a beat as like the atom of music. You can divide partial beats but it’s in equal halves. Eighth note, sixteenth note.
