@Ishtar @Gangstress Because they can give the gift of life and in some if not most of the matriarchal cultures that's the main reason women were respected. With the development of the patriarchy, men got a bigger role in society, left the women to take care of the house and even took their voice from them. Women's day is celebrated because they wanted their voices back as well as equality between genders but the reason Women's day is more popular than Men's day is that men didn't have to fight for that, their rights weren't taken away from them.
Men spend a couple of minutes to inseminate a woman and then she has to carry the baby for 9 months and give birth which can be hours and hours of pain. And even if she isn't pregnant, she can still feel pain every month and regardless of that, she has to act like everything's alright. Not to mention the great legacy patriarchy has given us - to separate work into "male" and "female" with women doing what has to be done and men washing the dishes once and proclaiming "Honey, I washed the dishes for you".
