Just how far can a person fall before they just completely lose their mind?

It depends on the person....I fell to as close to rock bottom as I’d ever want to be in my late 20s (drug abuse, alcoholism, indiscriminate sex, dropped out of school). Yet, somehow, here I am in my mid 60s without having completely lost my mind...I’m relatively certain that some in my position would not have been so fortunate.

It will be different for everyone. It is also up to the person as to what happens after the mind is lost. It's not a bad thing.
