Would you do what Charles Ramsey did under the same type of circumstances?

Ramsey is the guy in Cleveland who put down his hamburger to go across the street to help Amanda Berry, and eventually her 2 friends, escape from his neighbor's house where they'd been held prisoner for over 10 years.

Other neighbors didn't notice anything and one neighbor walked right by the house ignoring Berry's screams for help.

I was impressed that Ramsey was more concerned about Berry's situation than what his neighbor might think, or do to him, if he let her out. Ramsey broke down the locked screen door to help her and her baby daughter escape.

I'm reminded of an incident several years ago in which some friends and I were walking around a nature center on a warm and sunny day. Upon returning to the parking area, we were walking towards our vehicle when we heard a woman's voice screaming for help from the car parked next to ours. I and a few others immediately walked over to see if we could help, only to find we were facing a car full of drunken idiots who immediately started laughing at us for taking them seriously. As we turned away and piled into our own vehicle, I could hear the woman sarcastically comment to her companions, words to the effect of "What, did they think I was serious? Some people just can't take a joke."

This is not to say that, upon hearing cries for help, I might not respond again. I almost certainly would. But I can kind of understand why some people might not.
