i dont think many Brits say they are British. We are English, Welsh, Scotish or Irish.
I think we are a very divided nation right now.

@RubySoo Although we are indeed divided, I’m not sure nationality is the main cause of the divisions.
RubySoo · 56-60, F
@MartinII what is then?
MartinII · 70-79, M
@RubySoo Well, one would need to write a long essay to do justice to the question. But at risk of over-simplifying, I would say the single greatest cause of divisions is whether one feels in tune with the “liberal” establishment or not. To put the same point another way, does one feel “alienated” or not.

@MartinII when people ask we where im from and i say Wales they usually reply with...ah..English.....erm....no.....lol....grrrrrrr.

@RubySoo we all have the same passports... from the united kingdom of great britain and northern ireland.... it is only politicians and monarchs who make us divided (or united, when it suits their own objectives)
RubySoo · 56-60, F
@Justme264 no ..its much deeper than that! Are you English?
Justme264 · 70-79, M
@RubySoo i was born in england but what does that actually mean?

I don't care if i was born in wales or aberdeen or truro......

People born in Louisiana call themselves Americans even though one time that State was not part of what is now USA... people born in Normandy call themselves French even though the they were at one time, separate countries.

Just my humble opinion is all
RubySoo · 56-60, F
@Justme264 i entirely agree that we should be one nation....but we are not. Im Welsh....everywhere i go people say im English! We say...' welsh' they say where? We say Wales! British, Uk.....ah...they say....ENGLISH!
It grates a bit.... it shouldnt.. but it does. I bet nobody mistakes you for being Welsh or Scots!! Lol
Justme264 · 70-79, M
@RubySoo I agree that saying you are english is innapropriate in that sense.... they should know we are "not all english" ... which is why it can be less offensive to be called "british" when we are all o/seas. I will say you are Welsh if you prefer when we are in a bar in the uk arguing about this. I dislike Americans calling us/me english... I'm not... i am british.

Are we not all one country only by historical accidents... the english invading wales and ireland (blame the vikings and danes for all that aggressive blood in us) and then running out of royal family in 1603 ish and needing to borrow scotlands king of the time... and they needing us to do so for financial reasons.

Should we rename the six nations tournament, the three regions, france italy and "all ireland" tournament?

;)

Only joking

@RubySoo i am not claiming we are.....many of us seem to hate many of us.... historical and political... but that should not stop us all being "British"..... which was the original question.

I went to a place called Queensferry a few years ago, twice... don't ask... and it is tucked just inside Wales .... around the corner from Port Sunlight I think. So the Asda therechas everything labeled in two languages.... ok makes no difference although it is an additional cost.... but everyone is walking around in Asda speaking english in a Liverpool accent!

I just think I feel "british", from the UK not a regional person is all. But an interesting convo....
RubySoo · 56-60, F
@Justme264 As you said.....Queensferry is just in Wales.....and many people who live there are from Liverpool and the surrounding areas. Some areas deep within Wales are obviously much 'Welsher' but the shops there still have to have English signage as well as Welsh. This doesnt happen in England though?? In England we are all expected to speak English!
I know it can sound very petty of me....but English people often really dont understand the double standard. We are all British and are free to live and work anywhere in Britain....but he have to speak English to do so. Schools are funded differently across the country....so is the NSH..... so there isnt even a standard by which we all live. All these things add to the division of our nation.....if we are British and a united Britain...we should have one government making descisions for all....whereas in recent years Scotland and Wales have had more of a say.....but to me....that divides us more....its not bringing us together.
Which...is a shame. If Brexit happens we need more than ever to unite....but....i cant see it being that way at all. 😔
Justme264 · 70-79, M
@RubySoo I agree with you .... personally, I feel Brexit to be a mistake and it will divide us more.

Our ex neighbour moved to Wales and started to learn welsh.... I might do the same if it was me... I would not expect to exempt....

I feel it is a tragedy that we are all going to be divided

@Justme264 i love the way the home nations enjoy their differences and individuality.....but we need more 'Britishness' to move forward.
I dont know much about politics but having worked in the health industry and education i do know kids in Wales get less per head for their education than kids in England..and people in Wales get all their perscriptions for free!! Hows that a good thing? All these little things cause niggles and unrest. It needs sorting.
Justme264 · 70-79, M
@RubySoo totally agree... it makes no sense.
MartinII · 70-79, M
@RubySoo Sadly, it’s difficult to see how it can be sorted, the Blair government having sold the pass on devolution which is unlikely to be reversed.
