What's the best advice anyone has ever given you?

People in my life don't give me a lot of advice tbh. They're too busy tending to themselves and their own needs. However I had a teacher once, I'm sad that it went so sideways between us, but he confirmed what I believe in. He said that you should never do something just because someone else thinks it's a good idea, because they're not the one who has to struggle with the consequences of the decision.
