The Ilias, by Homer. I consider that book to be the root of all literature. In a sense, it's the first modern book. The book has an author, it's not been written by an anonymous collective, such as the Bible. It's a book about our time, about a young man who refuses to "serve", who refuses to fight in a pointless war.
Isn't it amazing? The first Western book is about a conscientious objector.
