Statements like that come from a place of fear. This is not to say that their fears are entirely unfounded but when someone has been hurt before by others, it's not uncommon to form a defense by projecting similar traits on people with similar defining characteristics, e.g., I dated women who were only attracted to my wealth, therefore they must all be that way. It protects the person who formulates the blanket statement at the expense of a lot of people whom it doesn't aptly describe.
