Why do cats seem smarter than dogs even though they're not?

Dogs and cats are equally smart, cats just don't feel the need to perform on command.

@Dan193 because their history has been one of independence, while dogs have been working very closely with humans since prehistory

@Dan193 exactly. They were kept around for a long time, since they were useful, but not domesticated

@Dan193 Cats actually weren't domesticated, as dogs were. They came because there were mice (food) around the grains. They slowly became accustomed to us and realized we could scratch behind their ears.
