What do you think Hate Speech is and should it be illegal?

Some people think hate speech is mid gendering someone. Some people think hate speech is talking about sensitive issues like illegal immigration and abortion while having differing opinions.

I’m some places “Hate Speech” can be treated as a criminal offense (Bill C16 in Canada)

What are your thoughts?

Hate speech in my opinion are things such as threat speech. Threatening someone. That right there should be illegal. Misgendering someone is not an act of hate. There are bigger, more serious issues going on.
