What do you think Hate Speech is and should it be illegal?

Some people think hate speech is mid gendering someone. Some people think hate speech is talking about sensitive issues like illegal immigration and abortion while having differing opinions.

I’m some places “Hate Speech” can be treated as a criminal offense (Bill C16 in Canada)

What are your thoughts?

Illegal immigration isn't hate speech just because people don't like it. Same for abortion.

Hate speech is essentially an escalated version of racism as far as I know. (Never actually heard any)
