Some mainly American things are referred to as "world" things, like the World Series. I've never heard of another country where that happens.

@jomsim That's interesting. I thought that was a "world" thing the whole time lol

SW-User
@SW-User it was named after an old newspaper that originally sponsored it I believe.

@SW-User I think some Canadian teams might have played in it at some point, but nobody else around the world.
There's a baseball World Cup which many countries do compete in. Current champions are The Netherlands.

SW-User
@jomsim Do you think they put "world" there just to draw more attention? 🤔

@SW-User Some people think so, but I think it was the newspaper thing that Nunos said. I do sometimes see Americans online say "the world" instead of America, though. It's kind of funny.

SW-User
@jomsim @SW-User according to wiki the newspaper link is disputed it was just considered the world but it isn't. Toronto Blue Jays are Canadian team who could make it into the final.

@SW-User I learned something new today

SW-User
@SW-User I'm a fount of useless knowledge....

SW-User
@SW-User Lol Knowledge doesn't hurt 😄

@SW-User Plus you used fount rather than font. It's a pet peeve of mine when people say "font of knowledge".

@jomsim FIA world rally cross (UK), FIFA world cup (France), World Archery Championships (Switzerland), ICC T20 World Cup (English), etc. etc. etc.
actually, most sports bases things with "world" in the Title originate in Switzerland...

@wildbill83 I think there might have been some misunderstanding here. It wasn't about the country of origin, but instead calling something a "world" event but not letting any other country in the world compete in it, as per the World Series.
The FIA is a motor racing association based in the UK, but the "world" competition they organise is open to the world. WRC champion is currently a Swedish man. Equally, FIFA (of France) organise the World Cup but it's also open to the world (which is why Brazil usually wins it, and America won the women's version just two weeks ago, you'll probably recall). For archery, medals were won by Americans, Chinese, Russians, Indians, etc. The T20, admittedly, is only open to ICC members and associates, I think about 115 countries around the world. The other countries simply don't play cricket but could happily join the ICC if they did, and gain access to the T20.
It's not really a valid comparison, though, because you largely chose international competitions (which would be fruitless if only one country was allowed to play), rather than national competitions with multiple teams from one nation (like The World Series). Really, it should compare to the FA Cup or English Premier League. None of our national leagues refers to itself as a "world" league, because they're not.

@jomsim English Premier league is an interesting example.... Swansea, Cardiff.... That's another country like Toronto Blue Jays in MLB we should rename it World Premier League 🤭😉😉
jomsim · 26-30, M
@SW-User Didn't even cross my mind. It's interesting to think that if neither played in English competition, Welsh football would be very similar to Scottish football.
wildbill83 · 41-45, M
@jomsim Baseball is referred to world series because it was sponsored by the New York world telegram newspaper, and the name stuck.
same reason NASCAR was referred to as the Winston Cup, then Nextel, then... whatever it is now

@wildbill83 Yeah, we kind of discussed that a bit further up in the post. I know it's not a deliberate attempt to exclude the world, and it's not a criticism from me. The naming is just unfortunate.

a few other sports have "world" in title, and were open to non-American races, drivers, etc.
but they all sucked at them, so they became a predominantly American sport... 😝
