Why are people shocked that I have big feet?

I was showing my neighbor's daughter (lets call her Valerie) my new shoes she looked shocked and said, "Layla, you wear a size 13?! 13 WIDE?!" I quietly said, "Yes" my cousin said, "Sometimes she has to wear a size 14 but she has to look online." Thanks a lot cousin for opening your big mouth. Then Valerie said, "Damn Layla you got some BIG feet! I mean HUGE!" I looked at her and everyone else around. My aunt said, "Dont look at me. It's the truth. Your feet are big. Plus you're a big girl. (To Valerie) She gets insecure about her feet."
Then Valerie said to me, "Layla sometimes when I wear my shoes, I dont even like my feet and I'm a size 8 wide. Plus you're tall it wouldn't make any difference." Like that makes me feel any better. I was embarrassed.
I'm 5'10 and sometimes I get shoes that are smaller than my size just for the sake of the latest fashionable shoes. My feet ended up hurting so bad. I hate wearing ugly shoes. In elementary school, I got called "Big Foot" and "Monster Feet".
