What are your thoughts on gentrification.

I live in South Bend, Indiana. It was and still is a run down town with an alarming crime rate. But over the past 8 years we have had a “ renaissance” you would say.

We have tore down a number of low income neighborhoods to put up new fancy and nice looking condos and shops. However nobody here can afford them so they’re just sitting there vacant.

This process has displaced a number of families who are in the lower class all for the sake of progress.

To me it’s putting lipsticks on a pig and has caused more bad than good for people here and caters to a group of people who don’t exist here.

What are your thoughts on gentrification?

Fuck gentrification. If people gave a shit about truely improving low income communities, they’d invest resources into the current community in the education system, local economy, and initiatives in terms of addressing crime.

All gentrification does is kick out current residents who can’t afford to pay the sky rocketing rent and put in some poorly designed modern architecture so some douchebag hipsters can open up random coffee shops and commercialize the area, stripping away the culture it once had.

It’s the equivalent of spray painting dying grass green, instead of planting new seeds

It is the American way to shit on the less fortunate.
@Unequal2Trash Sad but true.
I live in a rather small town and rather than "gentrification" the old part of town has become an attraction, lot's of funky and fun stores, a center of artist and writers, it's gratifying to see people avoiding WalMart and supporting our "old town"🥰

I think they should reverse it and give the poor people their crime ridden neighborhoods back
