What do you mean?

No there is a mandated limit
I used to have to garnish our employees for child support. That is a court ordered amount and it is taken regardless. If you have an IRS garnishment they will take a percentage.

No they can legally only take about 80% of your wages and they only go that far in extreme cases.

US Federal law says a maximum of 25% of your wage or 30 times the minimum wage, whichever is less. However, child support I believe is different in each state because that isn't technically a garnishment per se, so in my state child support is a maximum of 34% of your wage.
Child support here in North Carolina is court ordered if a voluntary amount is not settled before an attorney. A judge determines the rate based on earnings of both parents etc.

No. Your employer receives the legal notice and instructions on how to determine the garnishment amount, and where and how frequently to send in the garnishment. But the garnishment will not take all of your income.

In Australia - you are able to appeal the amount they take out
RealMustangGuy · 61-69, MVIP
@nedkelly: Here in the U.S.A. state law governs this area. The calculations are based on state prescribed formulas and there is no appeal process that I am aware of. But I've only dealt with this from the employer side, so maybe the garnishee has some appeal recourse.

And government mandated amounts are just as SBelle said. I was talking about non governmental garnishment in my reply here.

NO as it is legislated that they must leave you some money - Currently, the minimum amount of wages or salary that must be left for the debtor is $480.50

they take a percentage or a set amount. it suppose to leave you enough to live on but doesn't always work that way.
AnukBinary · M
No they take bits out of each check for eternity and forever
SW-User
No, they're only allowed to withhold a portion.
sighmeupforthat · 46-50, M
they're not suppose to.
MartinTheFirst · 26-30, M
Let me do the garnishing. 😝
uncalled4 · 56-60, M
No, it should be just a portion. Why would that be happening to you?
SW-User
iam asking in general
uncalled4 · 56-60, M
I like a sprig of parsley as my garnishment. Not that you asked.
