I woke up during surgery in 2007. In 2009 I meet another survivor who challenged me to learn about "Anesthesia Awareness", as it's called, and how to prevent it. So, I did.

4 years later, as I was getting prepped for a ganglion cyst excision, I was having the pre-surgery chat with the anesthesiologist, who seemed pretty impressed with my knowledge of his profession. He told me that I had "the knowledge of a second year doctoral student." It was a very strange conpliment for me, but I know a compliment when I hear one, and so I managed a thank you before being given the sedative I'd demanded as a two step process to eliminate the possibility of Unintended intra-operative Awareness. The other step is a BiSpectral Index Monitor, to make sure you're really under anesthesia.

I also made that first survivor a promise to never shut up about what happened to me, and to teach others how to prevent it.
