Should large scale exhibitions be brought back?

In the late 19th and early 20th century, large exhibitions were staged in cities across the US and the UK, such as the Pan-American exhibition of 1901 in Buffalo and the Empire Exhibition of 1938 in Glasgow. Usually as a means of showcasing industrial and cultural advancements.

Should something similar be staged today?
Why do you think they are not?

We have focused trade shows etc now. They are easier to market both to exhibitors and the punters. Huge ones just attracting lots of people simply don't make commercial sense to the companies you'd want to attract.
