Should large scale exhibitions be brought back?

In the late 19th and early 20th century, large exhibitions were staged in cities across the US and the UK, such as the Pan-American exhibition of 1901 in Buffalo and the Empire Exhibition of 1938 in Glasgow. Usually as a means of showcasing industrial and cultural advancements.

Should something similar be staged today?
Why do you think they are not?

@Winterwine That's cool, did you attend?

My parents went to the Glasgow Garden Festival in 88, not quite an exhibition but the last large scale comparable event to my knowledge.
