What happens to old mining sites?

I'm curious to know what happens to mining sites once their dried up of the resource being mined?

I've found a few companies that do fair trade stones so I feel comfortable about buying semi precious stones or gemstones. It be nice to know they were either replanted or turned into arable land for farming and such.

Most are abandoned to let nature take care of them. Replanting doesn't really apply to mining, and most mines are located in hills or mountains, not really prime farm land.

@Sicarium no that is true, I watch quite a lot of documentaries on mining and how the resources I use are gained and such. I am glad to have found a company that does fair trade resources. It also means I can sell it in confidence
