To many opinion is fact if enough people repeat it no matter how much it defies the realities of human behavior, scientific evidence, or historical records. While to others, there needs to be congruence in these things to hold faith in what one knows.
When you lack the power of knowing the proofs of what you hold as true, faced with someone who has it, their mind reacts violently to the new information. The easy path is to block out the new knowledge and blame the one who pointed out the error in their mind.
Mainstream belief is lazy belief.
