Why do people use quote marks to state silly terms other people use, when they have never used that term, and then mock the use of the term?

I see it all the time. Whether they are complaining about a person, an idea, they will come up with some silly couple of words that sound silly, that their opponent never said, yet put it in quote marks and then mock the words.

To piss off "pedantic" people

No? That does not piss of pedantic people. That pisses off people that don't like those that create false strawmen and then attack the strawman. Using up resources doing so.

Yrs it does. I read a study from the University of Massachusetts that backs up my assertion.

@ImAFreeSpirit: having a problem with a single, slight spelling mistake in a wall of text is pedantic, having a problem with an entire statement being a strawman is not pedantic. That would negate the need for the word strawman.
