How pathetic is it for a man to cry in train before people while thinking about something/someone?

And a couple of passengers end up giving you pat without asking the reason.

There are too many factors not in evidence.
To the onlookers, this man may have just lost a spouse or child (or pet).
You have no idea why people cry, and the only time it's pathetic is when the person is crying because they didn't get their way.
