Both approaches may provide a better understanding.
Knowing an author (and I know a few) while talking in the same language gives you a view of their inner perspective.
But each language also carry nuances that not always have a direct translation. "Traduttore, traditore".
And "asking" to them to speak Spanish only shows the other side of same "problem".
