When do you do your best writing?

What frame of mind do you have to be in to get your best writing done?

The best writing I've done has been when I've kept going back to it in different frames of mind (and sobriety). Sometimes being emotional can unlock something you'd never get to when unemotional, but then it always needs reviewing when in a different state of mind.
