I'm not a historian but its as if a virus spread throughout Europe in the thirties, fuelled by brutality, ignorance, feelings of inadequacy, racial hatred.... Hitler, Mussolini, Franco, Vichy in France, Oswald Mosley in Britain - were all motivated by a ruthless lust for power , belief in the superiority of their own race, looking for scapegoat other groups to blame for their woes...Tolerance, humanity, compromise were sneered at as signs of weakness. There were some Germans who stood up to Hitler & Co. and paid a high price. The majority were apathetic or kept their heads down to protect themselves or their families. Germany's partial defeat in the previous war made it a receptive breeding-ground for the thugs. I can certainly see some parallels in the present situation. There's a shortage of statesmen or women who could lead humanity out of the hatred.
