Why are some people so miserable such a sad way to live

My mother-in-law is like this. She has had tribulations on life but haven't most people? However she just focusing on the negatives not the positives.

Yesterday she said to my wife she won't celebrate Christmas because she's now on her own. Ignoring my wife and her grandchildren.
