Why was it considered bad luck to have a woman on board back in the day of sail ships?

oh al kinds od "reasons"
but as a Tall ship Sailor ( and other kinds)

I have crewed with women, had them under my command and had women as Skipper, I am fine with it

[big]HOWEVER[/big]

the biggest factor? the REAL one?

men will fight, over the affections of women.
and a LONG voyage, will make it inevitable

@SatyrService that makes a little more sense i guess - you can't have your crew fighting among themselves over a lass ^^
@SW-User when I am skipper, I have to be very tight on the leash, fellows can get to be a handful.
I'm good at it, and can say the hardest thing crew wise,
is the man/woman thing.
but i have also known some moments, where just the right kind of woman, can make a voyage into a Most Happy Time.

you would have been very welcome and very able on certain cruises up to Alaska!

you seem maybe to be something of a priestess of Parvati/uma
