@Fran63 I didn't know Royal Enfields were made in India. A friend of mine used to have a 1954 Royal Enfield, I'm sure it was made in the UK.

@Fran63 I am impressed you know about Royal Enfield - they are quite a thing in India actually - many people love the older ones - the ones with the start on the left rather than the right and kind ^^

The old Morris Taxis are quite iconic too - especially in Kolkata - they are actually called "Ambassadors" since that was basically the car name with which they sold under HM. They are also the preferred vehicle of choice if you wanna be really skilled in driving actually - they say if you can drive that thing up a mountain through the curves, you can drive pretty much anywhere.

TukTuks are fun and nice <3 they are called Auto Rickshaws or simply "Autos" over here in India - in Thailand and some other places they are of course called Tuk Tuks :)

Aww thanks - that's pretty sweet <3

@NankerPhelge they moved there... 70s I think. I bought an Indian one in the 90s when I went there and shipped it back.

I went there in the 90s that's why I know them. I helped set up an office for our company@SW-User

@Fran63 My friend's old one had a British registration plate so I'm assuming it was made in Britain. Vehicles imported from other countries usually have registration plated from whatever country they were made in.

@NankerPhelge @Fran63 i think the Royal Enfield of India is pretty much a different company altogether although its kinda reminiscent of the old "Royal Enfield" of Britain - they both have different histories as far as I have checked
Fran63 · 56-60, M
@NankerPhelge mine didn't I reregistered it once here. It had a Q Plate prefix as date of manufacturing was debatable. Someone stole it eventually and I never saw it again
NankerPhelge · 61-69, M
@Fran63 What does the Q registration represent? I've wondered that for a very long time now.
NankerPhelge · 61-69, M
@SW-User Are two different companies allowed to use the same name? I didn't think they were.
Fran63 · 56-60, M
@NankerPhelge date of manufacturing disputed by DVLA
SW-User
@NankerPhelge maybe they purchased the rights to use the name or something :/
iagreed · 61-69, M
@NankerPhelge Yes in '54 it would have been made in UK but India has now resurrected them
NankerPhelge · 61-69, M
@SW-User I didn't know they could do that.
NankerPhelge · 61-69, M
@Fran63 I thought Q was omitted from the alphabet registrations (P was 1975 and R was 1976).

DVLA issues ‘Q’ registration numbers to vehicles whose age or identity is in doubt.
NankerPhelge · 61-69, M
@Fran63 Why would there be any doubt about it?
Fran63 · 56-60, M
@NankerPhelge my bike looked like a rebuild using two. In UK they retested it and issued a q plate. My old "caterham 7" was a Q too as from several donner cars to make it from a kit.
NankerPhelge · 61-69, M
@Fran63 What are "donner cars"? I've never heard of that before.
Fran63 · 56-60, M
@NankerPhelge to build a kit you buy some bits but much like engine, gearbox, steering rack, braking system etc normally comes off at least one donner car you strip to get the bits to make it from.
NankerPhelge · 61-69, M
@Fran63 That still doesn't say what a "donner car" is. What would be the dictionary definition of the word "donner"? I have two dictionaries at home and it's not in either.
Fran63 · 56-60, M
Donor - my spelling is awful - apologies. I have dyslexia
Fran63 · 56-60, M
Donor car - make any more sense?
NankerPhelge · 61-69, M
@Fran63 I know what the word "donor" means, but I would never have guessed that was what you meant. For one thing, I was mentally pronouncing it "Donna" as in the woman's name. Also, I can't say I've seen the phrase "donor car" before either. It's not a phrase people use in general conversation.
Fran63 · 56-60, M
@NankerPhelge You should go to a kit car show - it'll be on everyone's lips trust me
