I write poetry and everyone tells me it has a very lyrical quality to it, but I have no idea how to actually transition to writing lyrics. I've looked online and asked people, but no-one seems to be able to explain how to do it. I don't know any actual lyricists though. That may be why.

Write about what means a lot to you, and write what you feel. For the first draft don't worry about the rhythm or the rhyme of it, just get the ideas down. The structure can be worked out later

Rhymezone is your friend.
Typically, I write the melody before I write the lyrics. It makes it much easier imo 馃し If you come over any quotes or ideas you like, write them down, and try to add the general idea in different words.

Do you have someone who writes music at all? I write both and I sometimes find that a tune can inspire the words and vice versa
