The real question is why ignore any of them? If they're depressed, they surely should not be ignored. If they're seeking attention, why? They clearly have some void they're trying to fill.
Yesterday I found at a 19 year old girl killed herself where I used to work. Perhaps if someone had cared a little bit more and made some effort things would have been different.
Never brush someone off without knowing what's really going on inside their lives.

Exactly. Very true. Well said.

Yeah well that's sad obviously but how do you determine the wheat from the chaff?

@Overlord: Why is it even necessary to determine who is saying what for what reason?

I just find the numerous depression posts tedious and annoying, if someone posts something and it's a serious cry for help then fair enough but if it's a fat bloke in his pants eating pizza then do one
As we get older it is harder not to let the world jade us and make us bitter. However, it is up to each of us to determine whether we close our hearts and minds to others. I know it can be exhausting...you spend so much effort helping a person only to feel played in the end.....but I think it's important to focus on how much good you can do rather than what sort of benefit or lack thereof that you get out of it. Why take the risk of brushing someone off when there was a chance you cold help? At least, regardless of the outcome, you can rest assured in the fact that you made an effort and spread some hope and positivity in the world.
@Overlord: That's why I don't respond to those posts anymore.. and I have enough of my own problems to worry about someone else's.
