Why are i phones so expensive?

I need a new one because my screen is cracked and the battery is now shitty.... I have owned it for two years but it is viewed to me as a luxury, one i adore but I can't spend money on at the moment... WHY ARE THEY SO EXPENSIVE?!?!?!?!?!?!?!??!

iphones costing $500+ is just outright absurd imo. can buy a desktop pc for what many of the damn things cost...
