Why are i phones so expensive?

I need a new one because my screen is cracked and the battery is now shitty.... I have owned it for two years but it is viewed to me as a luxury, one i adore but I can't spend money on at the moment... WHY ARE THEY SO EXPENSIVE?!?!?!?!?!?!?!??!

Can you spread the cost over 24 monthly payments? That might make it not bite all at once. That is what I did.

@silver1sil Don't some plans give away free phones? Can you get a free phone by being added to somebody else's plan?
