There are two types of questions depending on one's intention: one to cure ignorance and the other to feed arrogance/question authority

Never understood it but what's the point of the hijab?
SomeHand · 31-35, M
@NeloAngelo It is one of the physical manifestations of modesty and beautification. Half of Islam is modesty. Modesty encompasses body language, speech, actions, and how you dress. Men and women both have guidelines.

When engaging with someone other than your parents/family/spouse, then the women are advised to observe the hijab (a barrier).

The hijab is a means of beautification and adornment as well.

Do they need to have them? If so what if they don't have them?
SomeHand · 31-35, M
@NeloAngelo
God says the need to have them and that it is better to do so and not good in the grand scheme of things if the advise is not followed. It is up to the person to follow the advise or not.

@SomeHand i always assumed it was something to do with the heat. so there's no practical reason? just "God says so"
SomeHand · 31-35, M
@NeloAngelo

Depending on the cloth and material, covering oneself can actually protect against the heat
SomeHand · 31-35, M
@NeloAngelo
There are may be many practical reasons, depends on one's own experience and circumstance/situation.

so ultimately its like the Jewish caps or the Hindi sari and dhoti? a symbol of the religion?
SomeHand · 31-35, M
@NeloAngelo Maybe maybe not - Islam does not have symbols per se, but the hijab can symbolize islam. Christian women wore head covers. So did Jewish women.

@SomeHand okay. it sorta makes sense now.
