Does antidepressants medications really make people happy?

I've always wondered if it makes positive impact on people.
Serenitree · F
Happy? That's relative. I spent much of my adult life in a deep clinical depression. Doctors tried me on a number of different meds including one combo that made me hallucinate. Then one doctor said, take her off that toxic combo and try Zoloft. That was over 20 years ago, and I've not been in a depression since. I do, naturally, get sad if something happens to upset me or my kids. But, for me, personally, Zoloft is a life saver.

I'm happy to not be depressed, if that makes any sense.
Serenitree · F
@Random1Thoughts Really, it was pure luck. The doctor who prescribed the toxic combo, instantly labeled me schizophrenic and wanted to put me on some scary sounding shit, and that's when a visiting general practitioner, read my file and asked if they had noticed that the hallucinations had started about 20 hours after the first dose. No history of hallucinations, but my psychiatrist first poisons me then misdiagnosed me. Can anybody here say, incompetent? That doc ended in jail for writing scrips on demand....for a price of course.
@Serenitree
Misdiagnosed often happen unnoticed. I always believe in seeking second opinion with anything regarding ones health. Consider yourself lucky that GP spotted it.
Serenitree · F
@Random1Thoughts indeed I do. Once he put me on that combo, I couldn't have argued or even considered seeking a second opinion. I was in another universe. If he had put me on medication for schizophrenia, I have no idea if I would ever have left the hospital.

Made me suicidal. It was only once I came off them that I got better.
@SW-User
Have you ever consider herbal remedies? I'm not familiar but just wondering if there are natural remedies.
SW-User
@Random1Thoughts I haven’t. I’ve tried different prescribed meds and I’ve experienced the same effects.

I just stay away from all of that. Too scared that I’d get dragged back in.
Best to stay away if it's not beneficial for you or your wellbeing. @SW-User

They send me manic. Which is fun until the over arrousal brings on crippling panic attacks.
ButterFly2023 · 18-21, M
@Random1Thoughts Yeah, I don't take then ever (again).
@ButterFly2023 I don't blame you. Did you find some home remedies?
ButterFly2023 · 18-21, M
Nah. I just listen to Leonard Cohen or NINs. Or hang out on SW 24/7. Or take up being a drug/alcohol addict as a distraction.
LyricalOne · F
Nope, when they’re working properly, they make you functional and give you the desire to pursue things that make you happy.
So it's a trial and error with dosage and type of medication. @LyricalOne
LyricalOne · F
@Random1Thoughts Absolutely. Because there is still so much to learn about the functioning of the brain. Certainly no “one size fits all” answers.
kate21 · 26-30, F
Exactly! @LyricalOne
TacoCat · 22-25, M
They made it hard for me to get hard and ejaculate so it was pretty depressing
That's serious side effects. @TacoCat
ButterRobot · 51-55, M
Nah..just smooths out the highs and lows
What were the side effects in your experience. @ButterRobot
ButterRobot · 51-55, M
I think you can get so level that you don’t feel anything really. That’s not necessarily a good thing.
SW-User
it's hard for people to find a medication/dosage that works for them, and even then it usually evens out peoples moods more than anything
I guess it's good if it can uplift some people. @SW-User
SW-User
It probs works for some people.
So it seem. @SW-User
pentacorn · F
all i ever felt were the side effects, so it was miserable. far more miserable than feeling depressed. if i had been able to tolerate them, i might have never found out what was causing the depression, so it worked out without them.
Make a note to yourself to never take them again. @pentacorn
pentacorn · F
@Random1Thoughts i sure did make that note.
kate21 · 26-30, F
They make some people who are depressed less depressed. Not happy, just less depressed.

I’ve tried several different ones and the one I’m on now helps. S volatile as my mood can be, it levels me out to a degree and helps me to not fall into dark moods for too long.
@kate21
That's excellent, if it's helping you cope then it's definitely working.
They effect neurotransmitters in the brain... Mostly to increase dopamine levels. But mileage and effects vary from person to person
So it seem from reading some of the replies. @Callmewhatyouwill
They didn't make me "happy", they just helped me feel more balanced.
Are you taking them now? @AmbivalentFriability
@AmbivalentFriability Im glad it's helping you feel balanced.
