Why do we have such a strong urge to distract ourselves from the real world

We're trained this way... To drug ourselves, watch television, consume as much as possible... We don't have to do this, but it's much easier than putting the weight of world issues on our shoulders. I would conversely say that our natural urge is to solve problems, to try and live a better life. It's just that this life has become so unbearable and hopeless, so we suppress our natural desires... We shut out nature, remove ourselves from it, drug ourselves up, focus on instant gratification... And by suppressing our need to better our lives, we're perpetuating all kinds of violence, and not accomplishing much else. There's so much waste going on in this world. Waste of resources, waste of life and soul. It doesn't have to be this way.
