Race is biological. Ethnicity is cultural. So an example would be someone who's American in their ethnicity because they were born and raised in America, but their physical characteristics belong to a certain race, such as African.

@Reject I think (I may be wrong), where a person is born and raised defines their Nationality and not their ethnicity.
Reject · 31-35, M
@SimplyTracie Nationality is the country you are most connected with or belong to. Ethnicity is the culture of it. Now ethnicity can be linked to both race or a nation as both have culture.

@Reject So if an Japanese person (see pic) is asked their ethnicity, the accurate answer would Norwegian if he was raised in Norway. Correct?

Reject · 31-35, M
@SimplyTracie If Norwegian culture is what he understands and has the most experience with, then yes! That would be his ethnicity.

@Reject So in reality, if I understood the Japanese or Filipino culture and I ate mochi or bagoóng my ethnicity could change?
Reject · 31-35, M
@SimplyTracie Ethnicity can absolutely change. What decides yours is whatever culture you're most familiar with. This is typically the one you're raised in, but not exclusively so. If you later move and spend decades somewhere new to the point you have a better grasp of this new culture over your old one, I would say you've become a different ethnicity.

@Reject I’m kinda multi-cultured. Lemme think what I’d choose 🤔
Reject · 31-35, M
@SimplyTracie It's also very possible to be multicultural. I think that's a very good thing actually! 🙂 I'd be interested in what you decide on though. 👀
SimplyTracie · 26-30, F
@Reject It’ll be a difficult decision. I love Hawaiian food but I also love Filipino food.
Reject · 31-35, M
@SimplyTracie Lol! There's more to culture than food. 😝 What about the other aspects of it? Like... do you identify more with the Filipino's way of life or the Hawaiian's way of life?
SimplyTracie · 26-30, F
@Reject What way of life? We live in a community and be of help to one another. That’s the culture I’m familiar with.

How would you define American culture?
Reject · 31-35, M
@SimplyTracie It's.. very patriotic. Americans have a lot of pride. They value freedom. They're often very opinionated and steadfast with their beliefs as a result. They love the right to express their views and often feel they're the best. They're a bit entitled at times and demand much respect. If you disagree with them, they'll often prefer to fight instead of finding common ground because they're very black and white in thinking. There's only right and wrong to them. I'd say that's some of my idea about the American culture I've lived in my whole life.
SimplyTracie · 26-30, F
[@That’s our culture? Prideful and narcissistic? I’d choose a different ethnic group.
Reject · 31-35, M
@SimplyTracie I didn't say I felt good about it or agreed with it. 😅 But it is what I'm most familiar with. Unfortunately you can't just choose ethnicities unless you know them really well and have lived with them. I haven't lived anywhere else. I only know what it's like here. Still, I have a choice in however I'll be so even if my ethicity is American, that doesn't mean I have to act or be like the average American.

@Reject I live amongst many Asians. And they have an awesome culture. Their dance and their food and kindness and everything.

There are drugs too and I hate that part.
Reject · 31-35, M
@SimplyTracie Dancing, food, and kindness are all great so I can imagine how awesome it is! 😍

Yeah, we have drugs here as well and I'm not a fan. Drugs are so common here you'll find most Americans taking medication of some kind. I'm actually surprised when I see someone who doesn't do any drugs whatsoever.
SimplyTracie · 26-30, F
@Reject And there’s the gun culture too. But the best is NFL football 🏈
Reject · 31-35, M
@SimplyTracie True. It's pretty messy over here, but NFL football is fun. I especially love the half time show! 😁 It's the best part!
